Christmas cleaning in one day

Get your home sparkling clean before the holidays with our best tips for the kitchen, bathroom, furniture, and decorations, so you can enjoy Christmas stress-free.

A bright, modern kitchen with white cabinets, a wooden dining table, and blue textiles.

The magical holiday is almost here, and we can once again look forward to snow, oranges, and Christmas music. But to truly enjoy the Christmas peace, we need to clean the floors and carry in the firewood first.

To help you relax this holiday season, we’ve gathered our best Christmas cleaning tips!

Prioritize wisely

You need to assess how much time you and your family have. We all tend to take on too much, but we want you to still have energy to enjoy the holidays. Focus on what creates a cozy Christmas atmosphere — what is visible and what smells good. After all, what says Christmas more than the smell of a clean home, incense, and pine branches?

Get the whole family involved

Feel free to divide the rooms among family members, or assign one person to dusting and vacuuming and another to wiping and mopping. Find the distribution that works best for your family. And know that if everyone vetoes cleaning the bathroom, we can help you with exactly that!

Step straight into the Christmas spirit

Whether you’re expecting guests or not, it feels good to come home to a spotless hallway. This is the first impression of your home, so it sets the right mood immediately. Floors are an endless task during this season with snow slush and sand, but during Christmas, make sure the closet doors are clean and the shoe rack really shines.

Since hallways aren’t spaces where you spend much time, avoid using candles due to fire risk when you can’t supervise. You can still get those lovely holiday scents by using reed diffusers or an essential oil diffuser to create the perfect atmosphere as soon as you walk in.

Christmas cleaning for the kitchen

The kitchen is the heart of the home, especially during Christmas when gingerbread cookies are baked and the roast is in the oven. Before Christmas, it’s a good idea to clean areas you don’t usually reach. Check out our popular blog post on how to deep clean your kitchen. If you have time to clean inside appliances and drawers, that’s great, but we recommend saving this until the end so you know how much time and energy you have left.

Cleaning sofas and dining furniture

We spend a lot of time in the dining room and on the sofa during the holidays, so these pieces deserve a proper clean before they’re covered in cabbage and gravy. Vacuum dining chairs, then wipe them with a lightly damp microfiber cloth.

Vacuum and wipe over furniture. If your sofa has removable covers, they can usually be machine washed. Always read the care instructions carefully — not all removable covers are machine washable! If unsure, ask the manufacturer or visit a dry cleaner to ensure Aunt Olga doesn’t have to sit on the floor when she opens gifts.

Do this well before Christmas gatherings to ensure fabric covers dry in time. Avoid using a dryer — instead, place the covers on the sofa cushions while still slightly damp to stretch them as they dry, preventing wrinkles.

Let your Christmas decorations shine

Next, dust your decorations. Don’t forget lamps, picture frames, and flower pots. If you haven’t unpacked your Christmas decorations yet, now is the perfect time! It’s best to dust them before putting them up.

Floors come last

Floors should be cleaned last. Make sure dusting and wiping of lamps, benches, and tables is done before starting so nothing falls on freshly cleaned floors.

How you clean the floor depends on the type. Parquet requires different care and cleaning products than tile. What works for all floors is vacuuming first, then lightly mopping. Avoid too much moisture, as it can damage floors like parquet. Microfiber is recommended, as most floors tolerate it and you can skip cleaning products altogether.

Christmas cleaning for the bathroom

Clear all surfaces and rinse thoroughly with warm water. Use cleaning products suitable for bathrooms — usually mild alkaline cleaners work best. Avoid harsh cleaners on marble tiles, and consult the supplier if unsure.

The bathroom can harbor bacteria, so start by separating cloths. Use dedicated cloths for the bathroom, especially the toilet. Only use the toilet brush inside the bowl, and disinfect it with bleach afterward.

Avoid abrasive cleaners; they can make glass doors and shiny surfaces rough and dull over time. Use mild or lightly alkaline cleaners, or just a microfiber cloth, then wipe with a dry cloth immediately after rinsing soap to avoid streaks.

Finally

Clean touchpoints and details like light switches and door handles. Now you’re ready to welcome your Christmas guests!

If you have extra time, you can do a full clean of the bedrooms, inside cupboards and drawers, and appliances — but only if it doesn’t come at the expense of enjoying the holiday.
